John James Nerone
John James Nerone, 83, of Springfield died at 4:25 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, at Memorial Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 18, 1925, in Springfield, the son of Domenico and Mary DiGiacomo Nerone.
He married Wilma Ragains on July 29, 1976.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Tim Kelton of Petersburg; a sister, Grace Nerone; and a brother, Joseph Nerone.
He is survived by his wife, Willie Nerone; two daughters, Debbie (Mark) Witkowski of Glen Ellyn and Linda (fiance, Kevin Neuman) Dempsey of Murrayville; a son, Vern (Janet) Kelton of Blocker, Okla.; a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Kelton; eight grandchildren, Lesley Dillard, Maranda Dempsey, Jennifer Clark, TJ, Jacob, Meghan, Jessica, and Nick Kelton; a great-grandson, Dawson Dillard; a sister, Violet (Adolph) Mudra of Springfield; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
John worked as a supervisor for the Illinois Department of Revenue and as a chauffeur for Willard Ice. He retired from Department Children and Family Services.
John was a member of St. Aloysius Church, AMVETS and VFW. He was a World War II Disabled Veteran. He received a medal of Good Conduct, a Combat Medic medal and a Purple Heart. He served in the Battle of the Bulge as a medic on the front line.
