SPRINGFIELD – John E. Nance, 84, of Springfield died at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at Memorial Medical Center.

He was born June 20, 1925, in Cantrall, the son of George W. and Marie F. Workman Nance. He married Elizabeth G. Kobialka on July 21, 1962; she preceded him in death on May 18, 2006.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; two half sisters, Louise Lemons and Alice Cox; and two brothers, George and Tom Nance.

He is survived by five sisters, Frances Bobbie (Bob) Nicholson of Springfield, Mary Zorn of Washington, Lila Peggy Messersmith of Morris, Rose Woodrum of Petersburg, and Betty Maye (Bob) Dowell of Athens; two half sisters, Jean Dishon of Springfield and Jessie Henrikson of Petersburg; two brothers, James (Regina Reggie) Nance of Salida, Colo. and Charles (Viola) Nance of Petersburg; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

John was a resident of Springfield since 1962 and lived in Athens prior to 1962.

He was a welder at Fiatallis for 37 years, retiring on Dec. 31, 1984.

John was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He served in the United State Marines from 1943 to 1946 and 1951 to 1952. He was also a member of VFW Post 10302.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home. The body will lie in state from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, 2009, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, followed by the funeral service at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Darrell Debowey officiating. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted.
