Jerry L. Owens, 64, of Springfield died Friday August, 17, 2007 at his residence in Springfield.
He was born September 2, 1942 in Springfield. He grew up in Pleasant Plains, where he graduated high school. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Illinois State in 1964.
Mr. Owens taught high school from 1965 to 1967. He was a news reporter and columnist with the State Journal-Register from 1966 to 1972, where he wrote a daily political column and won numerous local and statewide reporting awards. He was the Press Secretary for the Illinois State Senate from 1972 to 1978 and worked for Senate Presidents Partee, Hynes, and Rock. He worked for the State Board of Elections from 1979 to 1982 as an Election Specialist. Mr. Owens served as Press Secretary and Deputy Director of Local Government in the Illinois Attorney General’s office from 1982 to 2000 and served under Attorney Generals Hartigan, Burris, and Jim Ryan. He retired from state government in December 2000.
Mr. Owens was also very active in the local community having served on the Springfield School Board, Convention Center Board, ran for Mayor of Springfield in 1987, and wrote articles for Springfield Magazine.
Survivors: Mother, Mary C. Owens of Springfield; daughters, Rhonda M. (Owens) Krueger (husband: Mark) of Peru, IL and Monica L. Owens of Springfield; two grandsons. He was preceded in death by his father, Carrol L. Owens.
Visitation will be from 4-7 pm Monday, August 20, 2007 at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 2 pm Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at Staab Funeral Home. Officiating clergy: Reverend Al Riddley. Burial: Pleasant Plains Cemetery.
