James ‘Jim’ W. Courtney, 68, formerly of Springfield, died at 12:20 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2009, at Largo Medical Center in Largo, Fla. He was born on July 15, 1940, in Springfield, the son of Arthur and Lois Courtney.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Courtney, formerly of Springfield; a son, Scott Courtney of Washington, DC; three daughters, Kim Courtney and Jamie Courtney both of Springfield, and Kara (husband: Mike) Packenham of Riverton; two stepsons, Steve McCurry of Springfield and Terry McCurry of Jacksonville; six grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He also is survived by two brothers, Art Courtney and John Courtney, both of Springfield; and a sister, Shirley Haley of Chestnut.

Jim had three great loves ‘his family, his union, and the Phillies’. Jim was a lifelong resident of the Springfield area until seven years ago, when he and Shirley moved to Clearwater, Fla., and Jim landed his dream job working in the clubhouse at the Phillies’ spring training and minor league complex.

He was a proud union member for more than 50 years. After working at Weaver’s Manufacturing for 16 years, he went on to master the pipefitting trade. He had been a member of Steamfitters Local 137 for 35 years at the time of his death.

A memorial gathering will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 19, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home, with a memorial service at 6 p.m.
