SPRINGFIELD – James Leavey, 79, of Springfield died at 10 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at Memorial Medical Center.
He was born June 13, 1930, in Edwardsville, Kan., the son of Fred and Florine Simonson Leavey. He married Shirley Taylor on Sept. 10, 1955.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lola Pratt.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Leavey of Springfield; two sons, Scott (Julie) Leavey of Springfield and Brett Leavey of Ozark, Mo.; a grandson, Scotty; a sister, Mary Ohara; and several nieces and nephews.
James was a resident of Springfield for most of life. He was the owner and director of Leavey Insurance Agency for more than 50 years.
He was a member of Christ the King Church and Knights of Columbus. He was named Man of the Year eight times over the years of relationship as an agent for United Founders Life Insurance Co. He was past trustee for Springfield Metropolitan Sanitary District and past Democratic precinct committeeman for Capital Township Precinct 28. He served on the advisory board of the United States Postal Service in Springfield and was elected member and past president of Christ the King School board. He was a veteran through three years of enlistment and service in the United States Marine Corps.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 19, 2009, at Christ the King Church, with prayers at 4 p.m. with Monsignor David Lantz.
A funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Christ the King Church, with the Rev. John Spriggs officiating. Burial will be at Sulpher Springs Cemetery in Loami.
