James (Jim) R. Ottery, Jr., 67, of Springfield died Tuesday, May 4, 2020 at his home after an extended illness. He was born March 31, 1953 in Waukegan, IL to James R. Ottery, Sr. and Ruth Haikkila Ottery. He was married to Sara Frances Cordell.
Jim attended Waukegan High School. He was an Eagle Scout and played high school football. He earned a B. A. from Monmouth College and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Missouri University Columbia and was a professor of writing and literature at the University of Illinois Springfield.
He is survived by his wife, Sara; daughter, Meredith Ottery of Florida; stepchildren, Claire (Tracy) Cross and Chris Womack and brother, Randy (Diana) Ottery.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
