Irene M. Kern, age 87, of Springfield, IL died at her home on November 14, 2013. She was born on November 11, 1926 to Ernest A. and Merle Laden Metzger and they preceded her in death. She married Matthew M. Cummins in 1945; they had one daughter Irene Carol. Matthew preceded Irene in death in 1948. She later married James E. “Gene” Kern in 1950; he adopted her daughter. James died in 1992.

Irene graduated from SS Peter and Paul Grade School and Springfield High School. She was secretary to the Personnel Manager at Allis Chalmers and later worked for Curran Gardner Water District. Her favorite job was working with her husband on the farm.

She is survived by her daughter Irene Carol (Ron) Ralph; granddaughter, Diana (Tom) Crouch; grandsons, Jeffrey G. (Sheila) Tapscott and James M. (Claire) Tapscott; step granddaughters, Rebecca (Matt) Wetherell and Sara (Ron) Lindstrom; six great grandchildren and five step great grandchildren; two sisters, Dolores Rogers and Florence Boner (deceased) several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation: 10am – 12 pm Monday, November 18, 2013 at Staab Funeral Home.

Funeral Service: 12 noon Monday, November 18, 2013 at Staab Funeral Home with Reverend David Daniel officiating. Burial will follow in Salisbury Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Petersburg Rural Fire District.
