SPRINGFIELD – Irene Gagaoudaki of Springfield, formerly of Chicago and Greece, died at 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, June 27, 2010, at Memorial Medical Center. She was born on June 14, 1923, in Rethymno, Greece, to the late Anthony and Maria Stamathioudaki Gagaoudaki. She is also preceded in death by one sister, Evangelia Gagaoudaki.
Irene is survived by one sister, Despina Pitsoulaki; one niece, Nania Pitsoulaki; one nephew, Anthony Pitsoulaki, all of Athens, Greece; and several cousins. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Church. She graduated from the University of Athens, Greece, with a master’s in classical philology and from the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago with her master’s of social work. She was employed by the State of Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, retiring in 2009 after 57 years of service.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Family and friends will gather at Staab Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at 10 a.m. for prayers before departing for St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Church at 10:30 a.m., where a Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. with Reverend Anthony Tzortzis officiating. Burial will be held at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
