Helen J. Melnyk
Helen J. Melnyk, 97, of Springfield died peacefully on September 10 at her residence at Bickford House.
Helen was born in on October 23, 1919, the daughter of Michael and Dora Jacks in Owatonna, Minnesota. She married Joseph R. Melnyk on September 21, 1947.
She was proceeded in her death by her parents, her husband in 2009, sister Anna Emmons, and grandson Joseph Z. Melnyk of Hillsboro, Kansas.
She loved dancing, solving crossword puzzles, chocolate, and playing card and board games with friends and family. Helen especially loved and cherished her family.
Helen was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and active in its Circle group. Prior to her retirement, she worked at the SIU School of Medicine in the Medical Humanities department.
She is survived by her son Mark (Sharon) Melnyk of Savannah, Georgia, and daughter Jane (Chuck) Jones of Springfield; grandchildren Tracy (Stephan) Pallmann of Berlin, Germany, Derek Weinberg of Fishers, Indiana, and Erica (Ralph) Jones-Lasley of Springfield; great grandchildren Livia and Henry Pallmann of Berlin, Germany, and Kelvin and Karlee Hatchett of Springfield; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Graveside Service: 2 p.m., Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at Camp Butler National Cemetery with Pastor Tom Christell officiating.
The family greatly appreciates the dedicated and loving staff and management of Bickford House and Memorial Hospice for their care of Helen during the last several weeks.
