SPRINGFIELD – Harold M. Smitty Smith, 70, of Springfield died at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at St. John’s Hospice.

He was born Dec. 26, 1938, in Springfield, the son of Harold J. and Neanetta Nettie Louise Conroy Smith. He married Mary A. Minix on Dec. 26, 1978.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; a great-grandson, Kaleb Christman; and a nephew, Bill Connor.

He is survived by his wife, Mary of Springfield; two daughters, Susan Annette Martin (partner, Linda Green) of Petersburg and Kathy Lynn (Tom) Cleghorn of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two sons, Albert Ray Red (Norma) Martin of Truth or Consequences, N.M. and Donald Lee (Rhonda) Martin of Taylorville; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Karen (Richard) Phillips and Sandra (Jack) Connor, both of Springfield; two brothers, Ronald (Donna) Smith and Ed (Debby) Smith, both of Petersburg; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Harold was a lifelong resident of Springfield.

He was an assistant manager for Sangamon Dairy Drive-In in Springfield, assistant manager for Burger Chef in Joliet, leased and operated Gateway Inn Restaurant in Newport Richey, Fla., owned and operated Demetic’s Restaurant in Newport Richey, Fla., assistant manager at Kitchen-Kaycok Tree Inn in Clearwater, Fla., kitchen manager at Safety Harbor Spa in Safety Harbor, Fla. and retired from St. John’s Hospital after 19 years in the laundry department. He also retired from Memorial Medical Center after 5½ years in central supply and then worked part time at Wal-Mart at Parkway Pointe.

Harold was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a member of Park’s Air Force Base Choir in California and served as an altar boy and choir member at St. Peter and Paul’s. He was a member of I Worship Center in Springfield and was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 4361 in Riverton.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home, with Pastor Dennis Nichols officiating.

Private graveside services will be held at Calvary Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
