Gladys L. Rockwell, 88, of Springfield, died at 3:44 pm, Friday, October 7, 2011 at Memorial Medical Center. She was born in Edwardsville, IL on January 10, 1923 to Julius and Charlotte Guttersohn Brandenburger. She married Charles Rockwell on September 13, 1947 and he preceded her in death on October 5, 2003.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Maurice Brandenburger.
Gladys is survived by one daughter, Marcia Harris-Doherty of Springfield and one son, Mark Rockwell (Companion: Janet Pedigo), five grandchildren, Jared (Cassandra) Harris, Abigail Doherty, Nathaniel Doherty, Douglas Mark Rockwell and Dayna Ray Workman; one nephew, Allen (Marilyn) Brandenburger and several cousins.
She was a member of the Illinois State Museum Society and was actively involved in the Senior Center. She loved reading, playing bridge, and sewing. Gladys was an accomplished seamstress. She formerly attended Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was the Executive Secretary to the Director of the Illinois State Museum retiring after 25 years of service. She did continue to volunteer for the museum as needed. She was a resident of Springfield since 1957.
Visitation: 4 – 6 pm, Monday, October 10, 2011 at Staab Funeral Home.
Lie In State: 10 -10:30 am on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at the Valhalla Gardens of Memory Chapel in Belleville, Illinois.
Funeral Service: 10:30 am, Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at Valhalla Gardens of Memory Chapel. Entombment will follow in the Garden Mausoleum.
Memorial contributions may be made to Senior Services of Central Illinois.
