Gilbert L. Knauff

SPRINGFIELD – Gilbert Lang Gil Knauff Sr., 85, passed away Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, at River Birch Senior Living Home. He had been a resident since November 2007.

He was born June 8, 1923, in Baltimore, to the late Edgar and Edna Lang Knauff.

Gil served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. On Dec. 20, 1944, Gil was united in marriage to Betty Marie Schadrow of Saunemin at Ellington Field, Texas.

In 1969, Gil and Betty moved to Springfield from Bradley with Illinois Bell Telephone Co. He later retired in 1982 after 40 years of service.

Gil and his family were avid campers. He loved fishing and woodworking. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers Club and volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House for several years. Gil was a loving and devoted husband, dad and grandpa.

Gil is survived by his wife, Betty; two daughters, Karen (Dennis) Corlett of Cartersville, Ga., and Paula (Jim) Huff of Lakeview, Ark., formerly of Springfield; a son, Gilbert L. (Deborah) Knauff Jr. of Springhill, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Scott (Christine) Reid of Bremerton, Wash., Kevin (Donna) Vite of Champaign, Michelle (Kyle) Davis of Springfield, Sarah (Craig) Wilk of Lake in the Hills, Elizabeth (Jared Vogel) Kelly of Petersburg, Michael Kelly of Petersburg, Jeremy Knauff of Tampa, Fla., Kendra Knauff of Springhill, and Shawn Knauff of Springhill; two brothers, Edgar Knauff of York, Pa., and Hugh Knauff of Neavitt, Md.; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Jeffrey Reid, Ryan Corlett and Justin Corlett.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home. The Rev. Vaughn Beeman will be officiating. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, at Sunny Slope Cemetery in Saunemin.
