George Preston Harden
RIVERTON – George Preston Harden, 74, of Riverton died at 12:14 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2008, at St. John’s Hospital.
He was born Nov. 23, 1933, in Aiken County, S.C., the son of Gary and Mary Swearingen Harden. He married Arrie Mae Beard; she passed away on April 16, 1984. He then married Prudie Braddy McCreight on Sept. 26, 1987.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Regina; his parents; a brother; and three sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Prudie Harden of Riverton, four daughters, Wanda Harden of Lincoln, Jennifer Harden of Port Orange, Fla., Tammy (husband, Mike) Grover of Springfield and Vivian (husband, Rick) Hutches of Titusville, Fla.; a stepdaughter, LeAnn (husband, Doug) Heflin of Omaha, Neb.; a son, Preston Harden of Titusville; a stepson, Kevin (wife, Sonya) McCreight of Riverton; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth (husband, Leonard) Gunter of North Augusta, S.C., and Carolyn Davis of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; and a brother, Jerry (wife, Janet) Cooper of Gaffney, S.C.
George was an auto mechanic for 40 years. He retired from the office of the secretary of state after 13 years of service. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was a joyful Christian and read his Bible every day. His hobbies were spending time with his family and grandchildren. He always spoke his mind.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 28, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home. There will be a lie in state from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at Northside United Methodist Church. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. at the church, with the Rev. Kathy Lossau officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
