George A. Cordier, 94, of Springfield, died at 6:30 am, Friday, May 25, 2012 at Heritage Health. He was born November 22, 1917 in Breckenridge, PA to Alfred J. and Verna Elsenrath Cordier. He married Dorothy A. Vitavec on September 24, 1941 and she survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Cathy Saling of Springfield; two sons, Richard G. (Carol) Cordier of Springfield, and Robert G. Cordier of Riverside, CA; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Russell Cordier; one sister, Alice Kendall and son-in-law, Keith Saling.
George was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran serving during WWII, during which he received a Purple Heart. He was a member of the Collier-Harrison Detachment Marine Corps League, the WWII Conversation Group and the WWII Illinois Memorial Committee Board of Directors. He retired from Airport Service in Anaheim, CA. in 1987. He and his wife were avid square and round dancers.
Visitation: 9:30 – 11:00 am, Tuesday at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 11 am, Tuesday at Staab Funeral Home with Reverend Paul Wehner officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail and the US Marines will conduct military honors.
