Ernest H. Grieme, 85, of Springfield, died at 1:54 am, Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at Memorial Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was born December 18, 1927 in Barry, IL, to Frank and Ethel Buckles Grieme.

Ernest was first married to Helen Furman on June 18, 1949 and she preceded him in death on June 27, 1976. He later married Theresa Furman on May 19, 1978 and she preceded him in death on July 24, 2010.

Survivors include two daughters, Debra Hoffner of Howell, MI and Dora “Dodie” (Michael) Stannard of Springfield; two sons, George (Sue) Furman of Lebanan, IN and Ronald (Sherry) Furman of Cantrall; ten grandchildren, Tiffany (Don) Huff, Heather (Erik) Kramer, Michael Hoffner, Libby Furman, T.J. Furman, Cory, (Fiance: Kassie Kern) Furman, Keaton (Destini) Furman, Abigail Furman, Cavan Stannard and Brendan Stannard; six great grandchildren, Madison, Carter, Tyler, Olivia, Dylan and Kailani and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Dale and Lloyd Grieme; one sister, Elfreda Pfeiffer and two infant sisters.

Ernie was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving from 1945 – 1948 and from 1950 – 1952 in Korea. He was a member of Riverton United Methodist Church, Riverton Masonic Lodge; Springfield Consistory and ANSAR Shrine and the Elks Club. He enjoyed bowling, golf, fishing, poker, pinochle and going to fish fry’s. He also enjoyed cooking and put the needs of others above his own.

He was the owner and President of Ziegenbein Associations for twenty-five years, retiring in 1980. He then worked for the State of Illinois Central Management Services from 1989 to 1998.

Visitation: 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Friday, August 16, 2013 at Staab Funeral Home.

Funeral Service: 12 p.m., Friday, August 16, 2013 at Staab Funeral Home with Reverend Dr. Jonathan Dixon officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to Riverton United Methodist Church.
