Emily A. Bernard
SPRINGFIELD – Emily A. Bernard, 91, of Springfield died at 3:14 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at her residence, of natural causes. She was born Aug. 21, 1917, in Springfield, the daughter of Dr. Emil L. and Clara Reisch Bernard.
She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Dr. William R. Bernard, Walter E. Bernard, Dr. Edward L. Bernard and John J. Jack Bernard.
She is survived by a brother, the Rev. George Bernard, CSC of Portland, Ore.; 16 nieces, nephews and cousins; many great-nieces and -nephews; and several cousins.
Emily was a lifelong resident of Springfield. She was an R.N. at St. John’s Hospital and then worked with her family’s private medical practices.
She was a member of Christ the King Church. She enjoyed playing Bunco and bowling. She was a Good Samaritan at St. John’s Hospital, a Hospice Volunteer and a Eucharistic Minister. She was also active in various craft groups and had made several thousand rosaries for various mission groups. She attended Ss. Peter and Paul, Blessed Sacrament grade schools and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy and St. John’s School of Nursing.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home, with a Rosary beginning at 7 p.m.
A funeral mass will be held at Christ the King Church on Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at 10 am., with Msgr. David Lantz and the Rev. George Bernard, CSC. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
The family requests that donations be made to a local charity of the donor’s choice.
