Edward Mitchell, 94, died at 9:55 pm, Monday, March 7, 2016. He was born December 29, 1921 in Georgetown, IL to Paul and Elizabeth Alexander Mitchell. He married Alice Stillwell on August 3, 1943 and she preceded him in death on December 7, 2013.
Also preceding him in death were his parents; brother, John W. Mitchell and sister-in-law, Harriet Mitchell.
Surviving are two sons, Jonathan Edward Mitchell of Chicago and Brian Cabot (Natalie) Mitchell of Springfield; two granddaughters, Nadia Grace Mitchell and India Bleu Mitchell and a host of relatives.
Edward resided in Springfield and was the owner of Mitchell Disposal Service. At a young age, he joined Zion Missionary Baptist Church to remain a lifelong member.
In addition to the business, Mitchell was an accomplished musician who loved to sing and entertain. He greatly enjoyed the outdoors. particularly, fishing and family gatherings.
Mr. & Mrs. Mitchell along with his Uncle Albert Harris and several local business men assisted in transforming the family farm into the historic Harris Subdivision affectionately known as “The Hill”.
Edward enjoyed an active social life as a member of the Hilltoppers, Sunday Evening Social Club and a charter member of The Vagabonds.
Mr. Mitchell was a United States Staff Sergeant, stationed in Italy serving during World War II.
Visitation: 11 am-12 pm, Monday, March 14, 2016 at Zion Missionary Baptist Church.
Funeral Service: 12 pm, Monday, March 14, 2016 at Zion Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Samuel Hale officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Zion Missionary Baptist Church.
