Edward "Ed" A. Ely
Edward “Ed” A. Ely, 86, of Springfield, went to be with the Lord at 12:52 pm, Sunday, January 3, 2016 at Memorial Medical Center. He was born September 23, 1929 in Springfield, to John W. and Marie S. Switzer Ely. He married the love of his life, Mary Sauers on November 22, 1953 and she preceded him in death on August 9, 2011.
He is survived by one daughter, Patricia A. (Donald) Tucker of Springfield; one son, Mark A. Ely of Olathe, KS; one grandson, David P. (Niki Kersey) Papp of Springfield and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one infant daughter, Donna Sue Ely; brother, Robert Ely and one infant brother.
Ed was a US Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. He worked for First National Bank as an officer/manager for the Trust Department and retired in 1998 after 50+ years of service. Ed was a member of Southern View Chapel, where he was very active in church activities and also was on the March of Dimes Board. He was a hard worker, enjoyed working in the yard, helping others, cleaning and waxing his cars and being outdoors.
Visitation: 5-7 pm, Thursday, January 7, 2016 at Southern View Chapel, with additional visitation 10:30-11 am, Friday, January 8, 2016 at Southern View Chapel.
Funeral Service: 11 am, Friday, January 8, 2016 at Southern View Chapel with Pastor Gary E. Gilley officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail.
Memorial contributions may be made to Southern View Chapel, Sojourn Shelter and Services or March of Dimes.
