Earl E. “Gene” Smith, Sr.
SPRINGFIELD – Earl E. “Gene” Smith, Sr., 76, of Springfield, died Sunday, April 22, 2007 at St. John’s Hospital.
He was born October 27, 1930 in Louisville, KY, the son of Earl J. and Ethel Burris Smith. He married Naomi Duncan on November 10, 1951. His parents; two brothers, John Smith and Dick Smith; three sisters, Mary Blake, Ethel Sullivan, and Betty Murrell; and one grandson, “Chip” Smith, preceded him in death.
Mr. Smith was a maintenance worker for Fiat Allis for 32 years, retiring in 1978. He also worked for Lincoln Land Development for 16 years and was employed by Hoosier Tire for the last 12 years. He was a United States Army veterans serving during the Korean War. He enjoyed bowling, racing, hunting, fishing, and going to the boat.
Survivors: wife, Naomi Smith; one daughter, Laura Rowland (companion, Chuck Rowland) of Springfield; one son, Earl E. “Jeep” (wife, Jodie) Smith, Jr. of Riverton; three grandchildren, Wendi (husband, Jeremy) Smith-Roberts, Jennifer “Tiny” (husband, Eric) Stark, and J.R. (fianc, Megan Kavois) Combs; four great-grandchildren, Austin “Do-Do” Combs, Madaline “Maddie” Roberts, and Tanner and Lexie Stark; one sister, Brenda (husband, Les) Sullivan of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorials may be made to Prairie Heart Institute.
Visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 24, 2007. Services: 9:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 25, 2007, Casey Scott officiating. Burial: Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted. Staab Funeral Home of Service.
