Dr. James "Jim" W. Grubbs III
Dr. James “Jim” W. Grubbs III, 69, of Springfield, died Saturday, December 8, 2018. He was born September 26, 1949 in Oklahoma City, OK to James W. and George Anne (Burney) Grubbs, Jr.
Survivors include his partner, Donna Bragg of Springfield; her daughter Kristin (Keith) Klasing and her children Erin and Lucas Klasing all of Springfield; one brother, Jon (Carol) Grubbs of Wheeling; one sister, Billie Anne (Robert W.) Kerr of Plainfield; three nieces, Elizabeth, Kristina, Rachel Grubbs; one nephew, Claus Kerr; and one great nephew David.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister-in-law, Kathy Grubbs.
Jim was a resident of Central Illinois since 1969. He retired from the University of Illinois in Springfield after 22 years of employment as an Associate Professor of Communications. He earned his PhD in Communications at Indiana University after receiving a Master’s degree from Sangamon State University. He previously worked for the State Emergency Services and was an on-air personality for WMAY and WSMI. Jim was also the co-host for a teen-based weekly show that aired on the Armed Forces Radio Far East Network.
He was a prolific technical author and also authored books on growing up in a military family. He was an avid amateur radio operator licensed as KR6EN.
A Celebration of James Life will be held at 2 pm, Thursday, January 24, 2019 at UIS, PAC Restaurant, 2200 Ernest Hemingway Dr., Springfield, IL.
