Doug Cates, 73, of Springfield, passed away at 3:10 am, Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at St. John’s Hospice from a long battle with cancer. Doug was born on October 3, 1944, in Springfield, IL. He was the son of Frank and Lillian (Foster) Cates. He married Karen Dunn on August 10, 1968.

He graduated from Lanphier High School and served four years in the United States Air Force. He was employed at Borden Chemical, Fiat Allis, and had a lawn service for 28 years.

He is survived by his wife; daughter, Jennifer (Robert) Edmiston of Roscoe, IL; son, J.D. (Alexis) Cates of Sherman, IL; brother, Roger (Donna) Cates of Colorado Springs, CO; sister, Linda Rohloff of Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren, Alexandria and Zachary Edmiston, and Joshua and Braddock Cates.
The family would like to thank the staff at St. John’s who cared for our husband and dad, with their excellent care and compassion.

Celebration of Life: Family will receive friends for lunch and fellowship from 12pm-4pm on Saturday March 24, 2018 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 335 S. 4th St., Riverton. Sharing about and remembering Doug will be at 12:30. Casual attire requested.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
