Dorothy E Guyott
Dorothy E. Guyott, 94, of Springfield, died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, June 7, 2012 at Oak Terrace Nursing Home. She was born February 24, 1918 in Wayne County, IL to James E. and Estella Johanna Bewig Markham. She married Orville A. Higginbotham, Sr. on June 18, 1938 and he preceded her in death on June 13, 1942. She married Ora Lee Guyott on February 14, 1947 and he preceded her in death on June 30, 1959. Dorothy is also preceded in death by her parents, a son, James L. Higginbotham, Sr., two brothers, Neal E. and Glenn J. Markham and two sisters, Edna C. Myers and Mildred Cook.
Dorothy has been a resident of Springfield since 1959. She worked at Horace Mann as a Tech Clerk and Kardiveyer Operator and retired in 1984 after 25 ½ years of service.
Dorothy was a member of Springfield Southern Baptist Church since 1959 as well as a member of the Women’s Missionary Unit and Church Choir for over 25 years. She attended McKinnley High School in St. Louis from 1932-1934 and was a member of the OES – Job’s Daughters in St. Louis. She was a 1936 graduate of Carter-Standford Township High School in Flora. Dorothy was very active in the community belonging to several clubs, including Lilla Rebekah Lodge #63, F.O.E. Aux. #437 since 1971, Wesley United Methodist Church “Young At Heart” Bunco Club, Double Nickel Club at Third Presbyterian, over 50 years member of Farm Bureau in Clay and Sangamon Counties, A.A.R.P. Sangamon County Chapter #195 since 1985, Salvation Army Home League and Friendship Club, Senior Center Activities and Pinochle Club for over 20 years, Mosaic Missions, Gold Club Memorial Medical Center, Women’s Health Advantage M.M.C., St. John’s Third Age Living, Women’s Democratic Club, Children International Mission, Kansas City, MO, Seamstress for Mary Bryant Home for the Blind since 1970, Retired Eagles Activity Club #437, Retired Senior Volunteer Program (R.S.V.P.) since 1976, 4-H Club in Wayne County, Former member of New Zion General Baptist Church and McCabe Chapel.
Surviving are a son, Larry K. Higginbotham of Lincoln, three step-daughters, Shirley (Gerald) Bushue of Granite City, Elizabeth (Nolan) Venable of Flora and Gertrude Guyott Guhl of Ohio, three step-sons, Edwin Lee (Arydean) Guyott of Missouri, Hollis Harold Higginbotham of Elyria, OH and Orville A. Higginbotham, Jr. of Odessa, TX, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, several step-grandchildren, several step great grandchildren, a sister, Fay Mack of Carey, OH, several nieces and nephews, four foster children or medical sponsor of Ayat Ismail Zughair of Hebron, Hiba Ibrahim A/Fool and Sahar Na’eem Kabajeh both of Gaza and Melinda Biescar of the Phillipines,
Visitation: 4 – 7 p.m. Monday, June 11, 2012 at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at Staab Funeral Home with Pastor Michael Keppler officiating.
Graveside service will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at Elmwood Cemetery in Flora, IL.
Memorials may be made to the Lilla Rebekah Lodge #63 in Springfield or F.O.E. Aux, #437 in Springfield.
