Dorothy "Dot" Kovaly
Dorothy “Dot” Kovaly, 93, of Springfield, IL, passed away at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2011, at Oak Terrace Healthcare Center where she resided.
Dorothy was born in Glasgow, Scotland on January 19, 1918 to Alexander and Dora Louisa Whittet and was of the Episcopalian faith. She grew up in Glasgow and graduated from Morgan Academy. She married Thomas Kovaly in 1945 and came to the United States in 1946. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1994, her parents and two brothers: Charlie and Leonard.
She was a competitive swimmer in her early years in Scotland. She worked at the USO during World War II and survived many air raids. Dorothy was a great animal lover, taking in stray dogs and caring for them. She was a member of the Blue Ridge Club for many years and loved to travel. She worked as a furrier for Max Karpman for many years and worked for Horace Mann until her retirement.
She is survived by her sister-in-law: Gertie Whittet of Scotland; niece: Christine (Ian) Smith of Thateham, England; a very special and dear friend: Ula Pritchet; special friends at Oak Terrace, and many other friends and cousins.
Funeral Service: Family and friends will gather at Staab Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 28, 2011 and process to Camp Butler National Cemetery for a graveside service at 11:00 a.m., with The Very Reverend Robert E. Brodie, officiating.
In lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Animal Protective League.
