DERBY LINE, Vt. – Deldon Raymond Grant, (Del) of Derby Line, Vt., passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, in Newport, Vt., after a long illness at the age of 83.

He was born Dec. 6, 1924 in Morgan, Vt., a son of Henry and Cora (Allen) Grant. He was a resident of Petersburg for many years, followed by Springfield. Later in life, he spent his summers in Vermont near his childhood home and his winters in Tucson, Ariz.

Mr. Grant served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and saw action in the South Pacific, including the invasion of Iwo Jima. Early in his career, he worked in coal mines previously operated in central Illinois and later took up a trade as a boilermaker with Union No. 363 until his retirement. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, camping, playing guitar and card games. He was a member of the VFW of Newport, Vt., and formerly a member of the Methodist Church of Petersburg and Masonic Fraternity and Shriners of Illinois.

Del is survived by his wife, Velma (Bingham) Grant, whom he married in 1998. He was preceded in death by a wife, Geraldine Gerri (Lane) Grant after 20 years of marriage; a son, Terry; a brother, Chesley; and a sister, Junietta. He is survived by a son, Deldon, and wife Patty of Petersburg; a daughter, Jean Krueger and husband Robert (Bob) of Thayer; a daughter, Tina Knollenberg of Springfield; and a daughter, Tammy Mittelstaedt and husband Fred of Valparaiso, Ind.; and two stepchildren, Duane Whittier and wife Teena of Derby Line, Vt., and Linda Wilkie and husband Bruce of Holland, Vt. Also surviving Mr. Grant are 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, Buddy and wife Celeste of Randolph, Vt., Aril and wife Joan of Island Pond, Vt., and Lindel of Hartford, Conn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial was held in Newport, Vt., on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, with the Rev. Roger Fletcher officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Staab Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Staab Funeral Home with Dr. Joe Eby officiating and burial to follow at Chatham Memorial Cemetery.
