David R. Schulte OFM
Our fellow friar of Sacred Heart Province, David R. Schulte OFM died peacefully at the age of 70 at Villa East in Sherman, Illinois, in the early afternoon of Tuesday, November 24, 2009, as a result of metastasized lung cancer.
David was born in Washington, Missouri on September 26, 1939, of Joseph and Anne (nee Swoboda) Schulte. He was baptized five days later with the name of ‘Robert’. He entered the Order of Friars Minor in Sacred Heart Province on June 21, 1962, in Teutopolis, Illinois, receiving the name of ‘David’, and made his simple profession a year and a day later. On the 22nd of June in 1967 he professed his solemn vows in Quincy, Illinois.
In his 46 year of fraternal service to the Province, David did the same work of building maintenance at four of the Province’s major institutions: the brothers school at St. Paschal’s
in Westmont/Oak Brook for three years, the minor seminary of St. Joseph in Westmont/Oak Brook for 13 years, Our Lady of Angels seminary in Quincy, Illinois, for five years; and finally for the last 25 years at St. Anthony Friary in St. Louis.
This brief history of his work in Sacred Heart Province, however, is only the tip of an iceberg.
Even though he often portrayed a stern exterior and a gruff demeanor, he had a heart of gold. He was always compassionate and helpful. Sometimes one might experience a bit of grumbling
or an expression of anger, but he would do whatever someone would ask of him. Throughout his life he maintained strong ties with his family and with his friends among the friars.
He was a whiz with electricity or carpentry or masonry. He would put his talent at the service of the friars. ‘Go to Brother Davey’ was the psalm refrain for almost any malfunction of
Besides his Franciscan brothers, he is survived by his mother, four sisters, two brothers, and
many nieces and nephews and their families.
May David rest in peace!
