David J. Shipley
SPRINGFIELD, IL- David J. Shipley, 65, died at 2:18 pm, Friday, October 9, 2015 at his home in Springfield. He was born September 23, 1950 in Springfield to William J. and Dorothea M. Crafton Shipley. He married Judith K. Pilcher on April 3, 1978 and she preceded him in death in 2011. Also preceding him in death were his parents and one grandson.
Surviving are his four daughters, Debra Kulavic and Melissa (Steve) Barnes, both of Springfield, Betty Jo (Rich) Ledbetter of McLean, and Katherine Massengill of Cedar Creek, TX; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothea Rose January of Fayetteville, NC and June L. Prehoda of Springfield; one cousin, Ruby Hart of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.
David was a member of the NRA, he enjoyed camping, fishing, the outdoors, playing pool, and wood working. He also enjoyed his loyal companion, Buddy, his Chihuahua, or “Chi hua hua”, as he called him, by his side.
David was a United States Navy Veteran serving from 1968-1971 on the USS Yellowstone. He retired in 2007 from the Springfield School District after 30 years of service. David served for 27 years as the Union President for SEIU Local #15.
David faced his battle with cancer head on with courage, humor, and a little sarcasm. To his hospice nurse, Fawn, thank you for the wonderful care given to David.
Visitation: 4 – 7 pm Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 10:30 am Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Staab Funeral Home with Reverend Jeff Grant officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
