David Andrew Roate
David Andrew Roate was born December 29, 1954 to Harold and Magdalena (nee Onderdonck) Roate in Springfield, Illinois and entered his rest November 3, 2018 in Olney, Illinois. He was the first boy but the third child in the Roate family, there were 8 boys and 5 girls. Dave grew up on Second Street, just north of North Grand Avenue. He went to the Illinois State Fair almost every day and loved every minute, the people and food and all the excitement. He was very good at taking things apart and putting them back together – and they WORKED! He graduated from Griffin High School in 1973. He worked in and around Springfield for a while, then decided upon joining the Air Force. He was stationed at Homestead Air Force Base in South Florida where he fell in love with ocean life and learned to surf. He met his first wife, Linda in Florida where they married and had their first child, April. Surfing came in handy when he and Linda moved to Hawaii. They added a son, Andrew while there. After returning to mainland, Dave worked in and around the East Coast near where his children were. He returned to central Illinois in the 90’s and started at the State of Illinois. He loved to drive and had some very cool cars. His last car was a beautiful yellow Mustang Convertible. He loved to go to car shows. Dave also loved the outdoors. He would walk on his breaks from work and marvel at the colors and shapes of plants and trees. In 2007 he met Cheryl and they later married, joining her in “Shangri-La”. He was also an excellent cook, bringing his much used Betty Crocker Cookbook wherever he went. His biscuits and gravy were legendary! Even though born and raised a Catholic, he embraced God through various religions, and settled quite nicely in the “family” at Fountain of Life. He really enjoyed the music and sang along when he could. He was a St. Louis Cardinals fan and loved going to games, especially in the “new” Stadium. He was very proud of his daughter, April who has attained the rank of Major in the Air Force. Dave was a very kind person, always willing to help, even a little dog on her last day to lay in the sunshine.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Paula Stanelle.
