SPRINGFIELD – Curtis J. Ladd, 86, of Springfield passed away Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008, at St. John’s Hospice.

He was born Jan. 30, 1922, in Taylorville, to Winslow Curtis and Margaret L. Armstrong Ladd. He married Lucy Ellen Baker on Oct. 10, 1953.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Dorothy Lucille.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years and three sons, Steven (wife, Jean) of Chatham, and Larry and James (wife, Selina) of Springfield; four grandchildren, Lauren, Samuel, Riley and Spencer; a sister, Margaret Landholt of Springfield; and several cousins.

When he was in his teens, he ran a model airplane shop at home. He graduated from Taylorville High School in 1941.

He was employed at Glen L. Martin plant in Baltimore and Emerson Electric Co. in St. Louis. He retired from Richardson Manufacturing after 46 years.

He will be remembered for his many years of roller skating in the late 1940s and early 1950s for Moonlight Gardens, skating with partners in a number of skating meets. He started skating when he was 18 and retired from it due to a back injury at age 75.

He enjoyed reading Shakespeare and other classics. He enjoyed spending time at the library doing research on the Ladd family back to 1200. He was very good at math, but most of all he loved and enjoyed his family. Curtis was an avid Cardinals fan and a member of Kumler United Methodist Church, Kumler Men’s Club and Sherlock Holmes Society.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home, with the Rev. Sylvester Weatherall officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
