Charles "Chuck" J. Wheeler
Charles “Chuck” J. Wheeler, 87, of Springfield, died at 1:25 am, Thursday, February 12, 2015 at Memorial Medical Center. He was born October 4, 1927 in Jacksonville, IL to Wendell and Mildred Thrasher Wheeler. He married Barbara J. Allen on January 24, 1954 and she survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Kathleen S. Eck of Springfield and Patricia (Philip) Runfola of Jamestown, NY; two grandchildren, James and Randall Runfola; one great grandson, James P. Runfola; one sister, Donna J. Blankenship of Springfield; several nieces, nephews and cousins, and several great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two step-mothers, Lucille Hayes-Wheeler and Carrie Wilson-Wheeler; one son, Robert C. Wheeler; one grandson, Randy Lee Eck and one brother, Wendell Wheeler.
Charles was a US Navy veteran serving during WWII. He worked as a carpenter for Local 270; was an agent and manager for Rockford Life Insurance Company and was a rural mail carrier for the USPS.
He was a member of VFW Post 755 and was a former member of 23 CB Club. He previously had enjoyed square dancing and was a former volunteer at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. He was an avid fisherman and camper and enjoyed gardening and mushroom hunting. Charles was a longtime member of West Side Christian Church and the TNT class.
Visitation: 5-7 pm, Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at Staab Funeral Home.
Lie-in-state: 10 – 10:30 am, Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at West Side Christian Church.
Funeral Service: 10:30 am, Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at West Side Christian Church with Gary Winkleman and Vaughn Beeman officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Sangamon County Inter Veterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
