Charles Herb Havenar
SPRINGFIELD – Charles Herb Havenar, 88, of Springfield died at 11:50 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009, at St. John’s Hospital.
He was born May 20, 1920, in Springfield, the son of Walter W. and Elizabeth Fish Havenar.
He married Betty M. Klier on April 27, 1946. They were married for 62 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Ruth Kuznick, Dorothy Griffith and Pearl Bucci; and three brothers, Lawrence, LaRue and Robert Eugene Havenar.
He is survived by his wife, Betty M. Havenar of Springfield; a daughter, Kathy L. O’Brien of Springfield; a son, Michael A. Havenar of Springfield; two grandchildren, Jacob M. Havenar of Boston and Ethan P. Havenar of Hollywood, Calif.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Herb was a lifelong resident of Springfield. He worked as a carpenter with his father for many years. He also worked at Brunk and Sapp for nine years as a buyer and as a purchasing agent for Springfield Electric Co. for 27 years, retiring in 1962.
He was a member of the U.S. Army, serving with the 13th Combat Engineers, 7th Infantry Division during World War II; St. Cabrini Church; past member of Knights of Columbus; and Springfield Electric Retirees. He was an avid golfer and gardener.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 6:45 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at St. Cabrini Church, with the Rev. Richard Chiola officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, where the Illinois Air National Guard Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
