Charles Edward Ransford
SPRINGFIELD – Charles Edward Ed Ransford, 87, of Springfield died at 8:25 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at Lewis Memorial Christian Village.
He was born March 1, 1922, in Assumption, the son of Earl M. and Ruth O. Holland Ransford. He married Donelda J. Fines on August 18, 1951; she preceded him in death on April 24, 2005. He also was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Albert Babe Ransford.
Mr. Ransford, a resident of Springfield since 1950, was a retired teacher, coach and administrator for District 186.
He attended West Side Christian Church, where he was a member of the Beau Knots Sunday school class. He also was a member of the YMCA and Retired Springfield Teachers Association. He was inducted into the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 for his contribution for starting wrestling in the city of Springfield. He was a regional director of the Prairie State Games. He was a United States Air Force veteran, serving during World War II. He was a graduate of Assumption High School and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and his master’s degree from Sangamon State University.
Surviving are a daughter, Brenda Sue Maloney (fiance, James Murphy) of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Steven E. (wife, Lisa) Ransford of Dawson; three grandchildren, Nathan and Christopher Maloney and Megan Ransford; two brothers, William E. (wife, Mary) Ransford and Lexington, Ky., and Dale E. Ransford of West Covina, Calif.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home with Charles Lee officiating. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery, where Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
