Carl M. Denk
SPRINGFIELD – Carl M. Denk, 91, of Springfield died at 2:05 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2010, at his daughter’s home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Oct. 27, 1918, in Springfield, the son of Anton and Theresa Scherer Denk. He married Dorothy Jones on November 27, 1941; she preceded him in death on October 3, 2005.
He also was preceded in death by his parents; and several brothers and sisters, John Denk, Anna Denk, Marie Powderly, Anton Denk Jr., Hilda Kern, Frank Denk and Clara Lach.
He is survived by four daughters, Mary Kay (Dan) Ewing of Calif., Jean Anne (Charles) Burgio of Petersburg, Jane (Bill) Snyder and Debbie Denk, both of Springfield; four grandchildren, Clay (Laura) Snyder, Sara (Greg) Killion and Andy Snyder, all of Springfield, and Erik Burgio of California; two great-granddaughters, Olivia Killion and Emme Snyder; faithful canine companion, Maggie; a brother, Ernest (Toni) Denk of Roselle; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Carl was a lifelong resident of Springfield. He retired in 1980 after 36 years of service with Illinois Bell Telephone Company, Service Communications/Plant Communications Department. Carl was an avid sports enthusiast. He was a member of Die Hard Cubs Fan Club and followed Notre Dame and Illini sports.
Carl was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Church, where he served as usher and lector. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the artillery unit during World War II in the South Pacific. He was a member of Holy Name Society, Telephone Pioneers and St. Vincent DePaul Society.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home. Prayers will be held at 4 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at Sacred Heart Church, with the Rev. John Nolan officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
