Betty J. Shadid of Sherman was born in Springfield, IL on January 17, 1936, the daughter of Charles J. & Virginia Marie (Sponsler) Ralph. She passed away at home to be with the Lord on February 6, 2014.

Preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Virginia Eddington; two brothers, Charles R. and Donald Ralph and her son, Tim Rodgers.

She married William Rodgers in 1955 and he passed away in 1977. She married Phillip Shadid in 1980.

She was baptized at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Springfield and was a member of the church her entire life.

Betty was a graduate of St. Joseph Grade School and Ursuline Academy.

Besides working in her home she also worked at Illinois Bell Telephone and the Secretary of State. In 1980 she fulfilled her lifetime dream of becoming a nurse. She worked at St. John’s Hospital until her retirement in 2008, spending most of those years in the hospice unit.

Grandchildren and great-grandchildren provided her much joy in life, along with devotion to her church. She was an avid gardener, known for growing lilacs, Mandeville and tall grasses. She read constantly, especially novels about the old west in the 19th century.

She enjoyed cooking (famous for vegetable soup), traveling (New England, western U.S. and seeing Canada from coast to coast.) Loved going to casinos, and winning some times.

Survived by: husband, Phillip Shadid; daughters, Lisa (Ron) Haggerty, Michelle Rodgers and Brenda (Steve) Konneker; son Dennis (Companion: Mary Ellen) Rodgers; her brother, Ronald (Renee) Ralph, several nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.

Also survived by grandchildren, Angee Lee, Heather Woods, Willie Andrew, Jennifer Rodgers, Jessica Rodgers, Drew Rodgers and Samantha Haggerty; and by great-grandchildren, Kayleigh, Cameron, Connor, Robbie and Raelyn (born January 13, 2014).

Memorial Gathering: 10-11 am, Monday, February 10, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Church.

Memorial Mass: 11 am, Monday, February 10, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Church with Reverend Steve Janoski officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Calvary Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Memorial Home Services Hospice.
