Betty Grace O'Connell-Bambrough
Betty Grace O’Connell-Bambrough, 92, died at 12:20 pm, Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Regency Care. She was born January 15, 1924 in Springfield to John I. Guyett and Frances Runkles. She married Robert F. O’Connell in 1945, and they divorced. She married George N. Bambrough in 1980 and he preceded her in death on May 30, 1997. She was also preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her daughter, Patsy (Don) Mitchell of Springfield, stepson Nick (Sally) Bambrough of O’Fallon, IL; three grandchildren: Brian (Trisha) Mitchell of Franklin, NC, Julie DeMott and Ryan (Adam) Logan of O’Fallon, IL; nine great-grandchildren: Maddox, Madison and Mia Mitchell of Franklin, NC, Delaney and Payton DeMott, Emerson, Brett, Keaton Bray and Brody Logan of O’Fallon, IL; adopted grandchildren: Rodney, Ryan, Rebecca and Reid Slayback of Springfield, and half-sister, Lou Covey of Springfield.
Betty was a member of the Third Presbyterian Church since 1934, joining at age 12. She was a member or the Etta May Johnston Kings Daughter Circle and is a member of the N.A.L.C. Auxiliary #21 since 1980. She worked at Sangamo Electric for 32 years as a general assembler until June 16, 1978. She continued working at Horace Mann Insurance Company for 10 years as a File Clerk retiring in October of 1988.
Betty was very thoughtful and caring. Her family meant the world to her and she loved spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to bake cookies and was known to many in her neighborhood as “Miss Betty the Cookie Lady.” She enjoyed embroidering, sewing, quilting and latch hooking before losing her sight.
Visitation: 4-6 pm, Friday, March 4, 2016 at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 11:00 am, Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Staab Funeral Home with Sandi Woodard, CLP officiating. Entombment will follow at Oak Ridge Chapel Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mary Bryant Home for the Blind and Third Presbyterian Church.
