Benny Leotta, 91, of Springfield died at 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at St. John’s Hospice. He was born on December 21, 1922 in Springfield to Joseph and Mary Zumo Leotta. He married Dorothy Olds on May 31, 1947 and she preceded him in death on April 3, 2012. Also preceding him in death were his parents and one sister Carmela Bollinger.
Surviving are two sons, Stephen Leotta of Springfield and Phillip M. (Jo Ellen) Leotta of Jacksonville; two grandchildren, Michael (Megan) Leotta of Springfield and Emily (Scott) Hudson of Jacksonville; three great grandchildren, Jack and Adalyn Hudson and Ellery Leotta and one niece.
Mr. Leotta was a member of St. Katharine Drexel Parish at Sacred Heart Church. He was a United States Army Air Corps Veteran serving during World War II as a radio operator on B26 Bomber, 32 missions in European Theater. He retired from Sangamo Electric after 36 years of service. Benny was an avid golfer. He enjoyed playing golf and working on golf clubs during his retirement. He enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals and photography.
Visitation: 11 am – 12 pm Thursday, February 13, 2014 at Staab Funeral Home
Funeral Service: 12:00 pm Thursday, February 13, 2014 at Staab Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Sangamon County Inter-Veterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
Memorials may be made to St. Katharine Drexel Parish at Sacred Heart Church.
