Dr. Basilius Zaricznyj of Springfield, Illinois went to be with the Lord on August 28, 2007 at St. John’s Hospital. He was born August 31, 1924 in the Ukraine, the son of Oleksa Zaricznyj and Maria Kostiv. He married Stefania Pidbirny in 1954.
Dr. Zaricznyj graduated from the University of Bonn Medical School, Bonn Germany and then came to the United States in 1951. He completed his residency at St. Luke Hospital, Chicago, Illinois; University Hospital, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois.
Dr. Zaricznyj came to Springfield in 1958 and practiced orthopaedic medicine for 36 years. Prior to coming to Springfield, he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine. In Springfield, he was a Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the SIU School of Medicine. Dr. Zaricznyj was the founder of the Orthopedic Center.
In addition to a busy practice, he wrote and presented over 30 papers at medical symposiums and published over 30 articles primarily in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and The American Journal of Sports Medicine. Later in his career, his focus was Sports Medicine, primary in areas of the reconstruction of the knee and shoulder. Dr. Zaricznyj was instrumental in developing surgical advances in these areas. In his free time, he was an excellent chess player and enjoyed golf and bridge.
Dr. Zaricznyj was a member of the American Medical Association, Sangamon County Medical Society, Illinois Orthopaedic Society, Chicago Orthopaedic Society, American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, International Society of the Knee, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and Mid-America Orthopaedic Association.
A loving husband and father, he is survived by his devoted wife Stefania; daughters, Marta Zaricznyj of Austin, Texas, Stephanie Schneider of Denver, Colorado, and Andrea Morgan of Houston, Texas; son, Mark Zaricznyj of Denver, Colorado; ten grandchildren, Ircka, Erich, Ivan, Victor, Ellyse, Phillip, Marcus, William, Ryan, and Ariana; and one great grandchild, Zara.
Visitation will be held from 10 ” 11 am Friday, August 31, 2007 at St. Agnes Catholic Church with funeral Mass at 11:00 am. The burial is at Calvary Cemetery.
