PLEASANT PLAINS – Barbara J. Mahler, 72, of Pleasant Plains died Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at St. John’s Hospital.

She was born April 11, 1937, in Cherokee, Iowa, the daughter of Oscar and Olga Anderson Smith. She married Theodore W. Mahler, also form Cherokee, Iowa, in 1956 at Mount Olive Baptist Church in rural Cherokee, Iowa.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Pleasant Plains, the Pleasant Plains 50 Plus Club, Ladies Breakfast Club, and past member of Zion Ladies Guild. She was a supporter of Relay For Life.

She is survived by her husband, Ted; five children, Deborah L. Sparling, Tim Mahler and Steve Mahler, all of Springfield, and Dave (Julie) Mahler and Brad Mahler, both of Pleasant Plains; eight grandchildren, Heather and Shannon Sparling and Adam Mahler, all of Springfield, Crystal Schneider (husband, SPC Joshua) of Fort Lewis, Washington D.C., David Paul and Clifton Mahler, both of Pleasant Plains, Michael Sparling of Collinsville, and Zackery Mahler of Hannibal, Mo.; three great-grandchildren, Ashleigh Sparling and Elliott Schneider, both of Fort Lewis, Washington D.C., and Eva Chipol of Springfield; two sisters, Ellen Gregg of Cherokee, Iowa and Mary Louise Millard of Wauwatosa, Wis.; 1 aunt; 1 uncle; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her parents; a granddaughter, Amber Rose Sparling; one brother, Sherwood Woody Smith; and one sister, Shirley Smith preceded her in death.

She retired as a unit clerk from Memorial Medical Center.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, August 16, 2009, at Pleasant Plains Zion Lutheran Church, with a lie-in-state from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday, August 17, 2009, at Pleasant Plains Zion Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be held there at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Don Pritchard officiating. Burial will follow at Peter Cartwright Cemetery in Pleasant Plains.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Plains Zion Lutheran Church Roof Fund or to the American Cancer Society
