Amy Helen Bieneman
Amy Helen Bieneman, 93, of Springfield, died at 5:30 am, Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at Illinois Presbyterian Home. She was born August 27, 1923 on the family farm outside of Mt. Sterling, to Perry Elton and Laura Belle (Cox) Gordley. She married Ted Bieneman on February 14, 1950 and he preceded her in death on January 28, 2006.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol (Bill) Rice of Springfield and Nan (Dick) Rentschler of Rochester; one son, Dr. Dave Bieneman of Aurora. Both son-in-laws felt that Amy treated them as children of her own. She has one surviving brother Roger (Anna Marie) Gordley of Quincy; a sister-in-law Eileen Bieneman of East Peoria; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one sister, Mary Siltman and two brothers Ronald and Herbert Gordley.
Amy was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church. She enjoyed reading, travelling, gardening and being with her family.
Amy worked at Camp Ellis outside of Lewiston, Illinois during World War II as an administrative assistant. The main purpose of the camp was for military training, although it was later utilized to hold German prisoners of war. During this time, Amy lived at a boarding house in nearby Havana, which was operated by a friend of the family. After the war she met Ted Bieneman in Havana where they eventually married on Valentine’s Day in 1950.
Once they were married, they moved to Springfield where Ted worked as an insurance agent. Later, he also worked in real estate and as an independent home builder. He finished his working career with the State of Illinois. Amy kept the books for Ted’s business while raising three children at home. In 1967, she went to work for the state of Illinois where she worked as an administrative assistant for the Illinois State Senate. She worked for several senators during this time. She was working for Senator Geo-Karis when she retired in 1985.
Visitation: 2-4 pm Sunday, August 13, 2017 at Staab Funeral Home-Springfield.
Funeral Service: 10:00 am, Monday, August 14, 2017 at Staab Funeral Home-Springfield with Reverend Jeff Grant officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
