Alva M. Johnston
Alva M. Johnston, 88, of Springfield, died at 2:05 pm, Monday, April 4, 2011 at St. John’s Hospice. She was born July 27, 1922 in Sieper, Louisiana to John and Alice Mae Bond Self. She married Harry M. Johnston in 1941 and he preceded her in death on November 29, 1987. Also preceding her in death were her parents; step-father Joseph Berry; one sister Adrienne Bordelon and one brother William Self.
Survivors include one daughter, Beverly S. (Ronald) Mason of Springfield, three sons, Melvin C. Johnston and Marvin B. (Sandra) Johnston both of Madison, FL and Carl Wayne (Linda) Johnston of Aurora, CO; eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren; three sisters, Maxine Walters of Harrison, AR, Marcella (Bruce) Beaubouef of DeVille, LA and Mary Lee Foster of Madeira, CA and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Alva was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW in Mounds, Illinois. She was a resident of Springfield since 1989 and previously lived in Mounds, IL. After 18 years of service she retired from Burkhardt Manufacturing in Cairo, Illinois where she worked on the assembly line.
Visitation: 9-10 am, Friday, April 8, 2011 at Staab Funeral Home
Funeral Service: 10 am, Friday, April 8, 2011 at Staab Funeral Home with Pastor John Walters officiating. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery.
