Alice Frances Jensen
PLEASANT PLAINS – Alice Frances Jensen of Pleasant Plains died at 6:50 a.m. Friday, January 15, 2010, at the home of her granddaughter in Jacksonville, Illinois.
She was born May 11, 1917, in Irvington, Illinois, to Armand and Winnie McCullough Langel. She married H. Dean Jensen on August 11, 1942; he preceded her in death on May 7, 1997.
She is survived by 1 daughter, Barbara A. (Charles Schweighauser) Jensen-Schweighauser of Pleasant Plains; 3 grandchildren Andrea (Kip) Leverton of Springfield, Deborah (Randy Flinn) Rogers-Flinn of Jacksonville and Jennifer (Craig) Hocum of Winona, MN; 6 great-grandchildren, Zachary Dean and Andrew Leverton, Jensen and Ethan Flinn, and Nadia and Hanalei Alice Hocum; one sister Aline Crawford of Florrisant, MO and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and 1 sister, Goldie Franke.
She was a member of Peter Cartwright United Methodist Church in Pleasant Plains. Alice began her career in 1936 at a rural one room school called White School. She taught school at Brocton Elementary School and upon moving to Pleasant Plains she taught for the New Berlin School Dist. She retired after having taught for over 30 years. Besides her involvement with school, Alice participated in community activities. She served for several years as a volunteer usher at UIS. She and her church committee served Thanksgiving dinner for several hundred church members for many years. She was also a talented quilter and was part of the quilting circle at Peter Cartwright Church. She was known for her strong caring personality.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, January 17, 2010, at Peter Cartwright United Methodist Church in Pleasant Plains, with a funeral service 4 p.m. Reverend Patricia Hutton officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, January 18, 2010, at Camp Butler National Cemetery. Staab Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to H. Dean Jensen Memorial Scholarship at Pleasant Plains High School in care of INB at Pleasant Plains.
