Abigail Kimmel Kane
Abigail Kimmel Kane, 60, joined the angels at 8:08 pm, Friday, August 3, 2018, with her family by her side at Regency Care in Springfield. It ended Abbe’s 12-year battle with multiple myeloma.
Abigail Ruth Kimmel was born on July 6, 1958, in Marion, the daughter of Amy and Marvin Kimmel. She was a 1976 graduate of Marion High School and she attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, where she met David Kane in the Daily Egyptian newsroom.
They were married on June 2, 1984, at the Kimmels’ farm near Marion.
Abbe was a teacher’s aide at New Berlin Elementary School for 23 years, retiring in the spring of 2017.
She helped primarily with kindergarten students, doing countless tasks including putting children at ease while pulling their baby teeth. She also became the official opener of pudding and yogurt cups in the school cafeteria.
Her love for children’s books helped make her a dedicated reading instructor. Abbe was a devoted mother who supported and encouraged her children in their many activities. She also loved being Mimi to her grandchildren.
She had several hobbies, including a passionate pursuit of genealogy.
She also was actively involved in 4-H throughout her life, first in Williamson County and later Sangamon-Menard.
Abbe is survived by her husband, David, of New Berlin; son Timothy and daughter Charlotte, both of Springfield; grandsons Liam Kane and Maxwell Kane; parents Amy and Marvin Kimmel of Marion; sisters Kay Kimmel of Burbank, CA, and Lorelei (Lindsey) Powell of Creal Springs; and niece Mariah (Levi) Bean and nephew Grady Powell, both of Creal Springs.
Abbe’s family would like to thank many individuals and facilities who helped in her fight with multiple myeloma. They include Dr. Mary Bretscher, Dr. Preet Singh, and Dr. Kim Schoenburg; nurse practitioner Brooke Trickey, Dr. Raji Vij, the hospice staff from Memorial Home Services, and other staff members at Springfield Clinic, Siteman Cancer Center, Memorial Medical Center, and Regency Care.
Visitation: 4-7 pm, Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at Staab Funeral Home-Springfield. An additional visitation will be held 10-11 am, Thursday, August 9, 2018 At Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 11 am, Thursday, August 9, 2018 at Staab Funeral Home- Springfield with Gary Winkleman officiating. Burial will be held 11 am, Friday, August 10, 2018 at County Line Cemetery near Creal Springs, IL with Dale King officiating.
Memorial contributions should be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation
In Lieu of flowers, the family encourages those who are able to become blood and platelets donors or join the bone marrow transplant registry at The National Marrow Donor Program
