Harold Gene Holesinger, Maj Gen., USAF, Ret’d., 86, of Springfield died at 11:21 am, Monday, March 7, 2016 at Concordia Village. He was born October 4, 1929 in Morrison, IL to Otto and Henrietta Hammond Holesinger. He married Dolores “Dee” Haynes on October 5, 1957. Preceding him in death were his parents, step-sister, Lois; step-brother, Gene and two brothers, Edwin and Kenneth.
Surviving are his wife, Dee; daughter, Kim (Tim) Curry of Springfield; step-son, Donald (Diana) Davenport of Montgomery, AL; four grandchildren, Dustin (Maggie) Davenport, David (Sarah) Davenport, Daniel (Emily) Davenport and Christy (Travis) Grupe and three great grandchildren; step-sister, Laverta; brother, Raymond (Charlene) Holesinger of Rockford, IL and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
After graduating from Morrison High School he attended Northern Illinois State Teachers College from September 1948 to December 1950. While attending college in Dekalb, IL he enlisted into the Illinois Army National Guard’s 33rd Division. Following discharge from the Army National Guard, he enlisted in the United Sates Air Force and entered Aviation Cadet Training. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant and received his pilot’s wings on September 12, 1952.
In 1953, after serving a combat tour of duty in Korea he returned to the states at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas where he was a gunnery instructor and a flight commander. Subsequent to his release from active duty in 1955, he joined the 108th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, a part of the Illinois Air Guard’s 126th Fighter Interceptor Wing at O’Hare International Airport in
Chicago. While flying with the 108th he returned to DeKalb and Northern Illinois University to pursue a degree in education. In 1956 he transferred to the 170th Tactical Fighter Squadron in Springfield and accepted full time employment as an Air Operations Officer, serving from Private First Class to Major General. He served as the Commander of the 183rd Tactical Fighter Group and was appointed as the Adjutant General of the Illinois National Guard during the Thompson and Edgar Administrations.
Civic Affiliations included; Air Force Association, National Guard Association of the United States, National Guard Association of Illinois, Reserve Officers Association, Strategic Air Command Reserve Forces Policy Committee, Reserve Forces Policy Board, Adjutants General Association of the U.S., Executive Council, National Guard Association of the U.S. committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. He was past president and board member of the Springfield Air Rendezvous; former member of many Springfield civic clubs including the Illinois Elks Lodge; Springfield Ski and Boat Club, Springfield Motor Boat Club and the Rotary Club.
Visitation: 4 – 7 pm Thursday, March 10, 2016 at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 9:00 am Friday, March 11, 2016 at Staab Funeral Home with Chaplain Chris Nilges officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sangamon County Inter-Veterans Burial Detail, Springfield Air Rendezvous Aviation Scholarship Fund through Lincoln Land Community College Foundation or Lincoln’s Challenge.
