Fr. Michael Ewert, OFM
Fr. Michael Ewert, OFM died on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at St. Francis Convent. Fr. Michael, son of Michael and Ruth (Wilman) Ewert was born August 16, 1932 in Dubuque, IA, and baptized Joseph Michael. He had one married sister, Mary Cullen, deceased.
He is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Jeanne Coogan and Mrs. Dianne Wickman, and one nephew, Dr. Joseph Cullen.
After completing high school, he entered the Franciscan Seminary of the Sacred Heart Province. He entered the Franciscan Novitiate in Teutopolis, IL to become a friar in 1952, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1959. His ministry was in three parishes from 1960-1969.
He then served as a military chaplain in the U.S. Air Force from 1969 to 1975. He returned to serve as pastor in several parishes until 1991. From 1991. From 1991 to 1997 he served as the Executive Director of St. Francis Village, Crowley, TX, followed by four more years as a pastor. From 2001 to the present Fr. Michael served in supply ministry to several parishes. Fr. Michael served in the following parishes here in the Springfield-IL, Diocese: St. Francis, Teutopolis (1961-65); St. Francis, Quincy (1960-61 & 1975-82); St. James, Riverton and St. Joseph, Buffalo (1987-89); Mother of Perpetual Help, Maryville (1997-99).
Visitation: 10:30 am – 1:00 pm, Monday, November 23, 2015 at St. Joseph Church in Springfield, IL.
Funeral Mass: 1:00 pm, Monday, November 23, 2015 at St. Joseph Church in Springfield with The Very Reverend Michael Jennrich, OFM as celebrant.
Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque, IA at a later date.
