Walter Russell Melcher Jr.
Walter Russell Melcher, Jr., 85, of Springfield, IL died at 2:05 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2015 at Memorial Medical Center. He was born on June 7, 1930 in Springfield to Walter Russell and Alma Kother Melcher, Sr.
Walt is survived by a daughter, Carolyn (David) Fickas of Mechanicsburg; two sons, Walter Russell (Sharon) Melcher, II of Springfield and Kevin (Barb) Melcher of Carson City, NV; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins and his canine companion, Bosco.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edna Melcher in 2001; two sons, Ronald in 2011 and Richard in 2012; a brother, Elmer in 1977; a sister, Ruth Snell in 2012 and a daughter-in-law, Lana “Toy” Melcher in 2009.
Walter was a United States Army Veteran serving as a tank gunner during the Korean War. He was the co-owner of the State Street Market Grocery Store until 1978, he then worked at SIU as the Stores Manager until 2006. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Memorial Gathering: 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Memorial Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Reverend Greg Busboom and Reverend Ladd Sonnenberg officiating.
Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
