William "Barney" Fahey
William “Barney” Fahey, 91 of Springfield, died at 2:45 am, Friday, September 4, 2015 at St. John’s Hospice. He was born November 23, 1923, in Springfield, to William Henry and Stacy Ashcraft Fahey. He married Patricia Davis on June 16, 1949, and she survives.
Also surviving are four daughters, Patricia Fahey- Dilley of Lakeland, FL, Marcia (David) Bentley of Pawnee, Kathleen (Kenneth) Nyilas of Springfield and Fadra (Tom) Birdsell of Ashland; two sons, William (Vicki) Fahey and Marty Fahey both of Springfield; 15 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; sister Norma Jean Burnett of O’Fallon and brother Edwin Leon Fahey of Springfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael Patrick and brother, Jerald Fahey.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, VFW, and American Legion Post #32. He was an avid Cubs fan and loved fishing and woodworking.
Mr. Fahey was a WWII Army veteran and served under General Patton in the Battle of the Bulge. He received four Bronze Battle Stars, each one representing a major battle. He received two overseas Service Bars; the American Campaign Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon; Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
He retired from the Illinois Central Railroad after 42 years of service.
Visitation: 11 am – 1 pm, Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 1 pm, Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at Staab Funeral Home with Reverend Martin Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery where Military Honors will be conducted.
