Paul E. Knox, 92, of Springfield passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at Memorial Medical Center.

Paul was born January 18, 1923 to JP “Cotton” Knox and Esther Dickerson Knox. He married his wife of forty three years, Shirley J. Sprague on February 26, 1972 and she survives.

Also surviving are his three sons, John Patrick (Nancy) Knox of Fountain Hills, AZ, Thomas Michael (Tracy) Knox of Springfield, IL and Timothy A. Knox of Miami, FL; two daughters, Suella Knox Tinsley and Marcia Kay Knox both of Springfield; 16 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Fuzz, Larney, Kike, Donald, Louie, Tom and Joe and his beloved sister, Kathryn Bangert.

Paul served in the United States Navy on the USS Ticonderoga. He and six of his brothers served during WW II and all returned home at the conclusion of the war.

He joined the Springfield Fire Department in 1952 and retired as a Deputy Chief in 1974. He was a Stationary Engineer for the State of Illinois until his retirement in 1987. He belonged to the VFW, Eagles Club and the Firefighters Postal Lake Club.

Graveside Service: 10 am, Monday, May 11, 2015 at Camp Butler National Cemetery with Tommy Knox officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail.
