The Joy a Dog Can Add to Your Family

We all know dogs can add a lot of fun to our lives, but did you also know they’re good for your mental health? There have been a number of well-regarded studies conducted over the last 35 years that highlight the positive influence dogs have on the physical and mental health of their owners. Of course, the same could most likely be true about any pet, but there is something special about man’s best friend. The affection a dog offers a person can hetherapydoglp lower stress and blood pressure, and it can even help heal a broken heart after a loss.

Since October is “Adopt A Shelter Dog Month”, we would encourage you to consider whether or not your family might be ready to open your heart and home to a dog, especially a dog in need of adoption. According to the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), about 3.9 million dogs enter animal shelters nationwide every year. 35% of them will be adopted, and 31% will be euthanized.

While these shelter dogs need forever homes very badly, you might find your family needs them just as much. In addition to improving your emotional and physical health, they can also teach your children and grandchildren a lot about responsibility, caring for those who depend on us, and unconditional love.

If you already have a dog at home, hug them a little closer today, and think about the ways they brighten your life. If you don’t have a dog, it might be a good time to consider making a visit to your local animal shelter.
