Mary Margaret Ford

May 19, 1927 - November 24, 2018

Mary Margaret Ford, 91, of Springfield, died at 6:40 a.m. on Saturday, November 24, 2018, at St. John’s Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Mary Margaret Brennan was born alongside her beloved twin sister, Kay, on May 19, 1927, in Rochester, MN, to Justine and Ed Brennan.

Mary graduated from Lourdes High School in 1945. Shortly thereafter, she moved to Springfield and met Tom Ford, who won her heart. They married on February, 26, 1949. After 68 years of marriage, Tom preceded her in death in 2016.

Mary was devoted to being a wife and mother and raising her four children. During those years she was active in St. Patrick’s PTA, Catholic Daughters of America, Toastmistress, and a faithful member of Sacred Heart Church. One of Mary’s greatest delights was helping other people. She volunteered as a Samaritan at St. John’s Hospital for over twenty years giving more than 17,000 hours of service. Mary volunteered in Escort transporting patients throughout the hospital. She loved taking care of “her patients” and sharing her joyful spirit with others. Mary was known for her famous homemade chocolate chip cookies which she loved sharing with staff, friends and family. As Mary’s family grew, so did her love for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mary loved her family with all she had. Her family was her greatest joy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother, Robert Brennan, sister and brother-in-law, Kay and Herman Ninteman, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Barb and Paul (Butch) Ford, and beloved son-in-law, Matthew Penning.

She is survived by daughters Karen Penning of Springfield, and Lisa (Mike) Letorney of Hingham, MA; sons, Tom Ford and Kevin Ford of Springfield, grandsons, Tyler (Rachel) Ford, Christopher (Jennie) Penning, Russell Ford, Conor Ford, Austin, Kyle, and Brennah Letorney; great-grandchildren, Maggie, Jude, and Wells Ford; brother-in-law, Don Ford of Springfield, and many nieces and nephews.
