John C. "Jack" Watson
John C. “Jack” Watson, 85, of Springfield, died at 2:56 am, Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at Memorial Medical Center. He was born December 10, 1932 in Riverton, IL to Clarence and Isabel (Markham) Watson.
Surviving are a son, Troy F. (Michele) Watson of El Paso, TX; daughter, Tracey (Mike) Hopkins of Ayden, NC; four grandchildren, John and Kathleen Watson and Cody and Riley Conway; one nephew, Jerome Watson; three nieces, Betsy Tucker, Marilyn Wilkinson and Brenda Ward.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Milo and Ken Watson; one sister, Virginia Kleban and nephew, Gary Watson.
After earning his BS in Business and Economics from Illinois State University in 1954, Jack served in the US Army. In 1957, he began his business career with Franklin Life Insurance Company, where he eventually became its president in 1989. Jack left Franklin for Midland National Life Insurance Company in 1992. He retired in 2000 as CEO and Chairman of Midland’s parent company, the Sammons Group.
He was a member of Riverton United Methodist Church, Riverton Athletic Club and was an avid supporter of the University of Illinois Athletics.
Visitation: 4 – 7 pm Monday, January 29, 2018 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield. There will be a second visitation from 11:30 am – 12 pm, Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at Riverton United Methodist Church.
Funeral Service: 12 pm, Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at Riverton United Methodist Church with Reverend John Cross officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
