Catherine “Joyce” Worker, 87, of Springfield, passed away Saturday, August 4th, 2018 at Regency Nursing Care. She was born at home in Sorento, Illinois on August 24, 1930 the daughter of Wayne and Madge King Lewey. Joyce married Norman Worker, July 22, 1951. She graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1948 and earned a college degree from Millikin University. She completed her schooling with a Master’s Degree in Child Psychology from Sangamon State University. She began her 50 year teaching career at the age of 19 in a one room schoolhouse in the Hampton School in Sorento.

After moving to Springfield, she taught for School District 186, at Butler and Fairview elementary schools, and then as a substitute teacher for many years after retiring. Her big delight was being able to sub at Sandburg Elementary School when her grandchildren attended there.

When it came to being a cheerleader for her kids and grandkids, she was probably one of the loudest, most enthusiastic voices in the crowd, whether it be scouts- she was a great den mother- or sports; soccer, baseball, basketball, football, volleyball, track, she was there, rain or shine, no matter how hot or cold the weather.

Joyce was the past state president of Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority. She was also the Elks Lodge Easter Bunny for over 10 years, going to visit children in Springfield hospitals, and at Hope School. She was active in her church group at Calvary Church.

For ten years, Joyce and Norman traveled to Bonita Springs, FL and loved being snowbirds in the winter.

Joyce joins her parents, Wayne and Madge Lewey, husband, Norman, and sister, Lola France (“Tudy”) Donaldson. Joyce will be remembered by her loving children, Herb (Peggy), Worker of Springfield, Wayne (Cherrie) Worker of Rochester; grandchildren, Lori (Steve) Lee of Ladera Ranch, CA, Barry (Patty) Mabe, Jason Worker, Kayla (Seth) Morrison, David (Fiancé’ Ashley Vincent) all from Springfield; great grandchildren Halie, Jonah, Roman, Nyra, Masey, Makenzie, Myleigh, Noah, Nolan and Adalyn.
